This course focused on various physical art techniques like pastel and charcoal as well as other concepts like still lifes, shading, and calligraphy.Â
The central project of the course involved a series of assignments, starting with choosing an art piece at the Worcester Art Museum and then illustrating and reinterpreting it over the remaining assignments, culminating in a pastel piece incorporating the chosen art piece. You can see these pieces below.
Inspiration Piece: Incomplete Open Cube by Sol LeWitt
Piece 1: Sketching the art piece using a grid
Piece 2: Sketching 4 different compositions using the original as inspiration
Piece 3: Taking one of the sketches from Piece 2 and experimenting with different color combinations with pastels
Piece 4: Taking my preferred color scheme from Piece 3 and creating a full-size pastel artwork of it. The cube is reinterpreted as a stage, with light strips and color choices used to suggest the shape of the original piece
